Aging Your Cigars.
If you are a cigar enthusiast then ageing your cigars becomes very
important. The longer they are aged the better they are and the
flavorful they taste. As the cigar age all the nuances of the
cigar come out, the subtle flavors and the complexity of a good
cigar shine through. When your cigar has been aged properly, the
flavor and aroma is indescribable and can be truly unforgettable.
Just as you want to age a good wine, you want to do the same with
your fine cigars. Many times cigar smokers will not touch their
cigars until they have been aged properly or for a particular
period of time. Also, ageing cigars is not a difficult process; it
takes more patients then actual skill. If you are low on patients
then you can always purchase a well aged, vintage box of cigars,
it will cost quite a bit of money, however you will have them.
Although ageing your own can be process that is enjoyable and you
can experiment to find the exact flavors and aging that suites you
best. Here are some tips on how to age your cigars yourself.
First, you will have to be patient as already stated. When you
receive a brand new box of cigars in the mail or pick up a few at
the cigar shop, you cannot smoke them right away. You will have to
take them home and place them in your humidor. It can take up to a
year to age cigars properly to achieve the depth and richness in
flavor that you will be looking for. Purchasing higher quality
cigars to age usually works better and they take better to the age
process. Ageing lower quality cigars may improve their quality
slightly, but you will not achieve the same results as you would
with a higher quality cigar. The best cigars to use typically are
the cigars that are very strong or have an extremely strong scent,
mainly because ageing will mellow them out slightly.
Secondly, you will need a high quality humidor to store your
cigars in. They must be stored in a very stable environment at all
times and the best way to do this is to follow the 70-70 rules.
This is simply that the humidity must always be at 70% and the
temperature must always be at 70 degrees Fahrenheit also. This is
extremely important and will make all the difference in the ageing
process. Sticking to the 70-70 rules will create the cigars that
you are looking for. If you go above or below either of these
numbers the cigars will either dry out off and on creating broken
wrappers or stale tobacco. The cigars can also become moldy or
mildewy and smell bad and definitely taste bad. Fluctuations in
temperature are never good for your cigars and it definitely is
not a good idea when you are trying to age them. When the
temperature swings back and forth the cigars will expand and
contract unnecessarily, again causing cracking of the wrapper.
Lastly, do not put to many cigars into the humidor. There should
be about half as many as the humidor can hold to give them plenty
of room and making the ageing process go more smoothly. This will
also make keeping the temperature correct easier. Also, the lining
of the humidor should be made of cedar. Cedar is a very aromatic
wood and is full of oils. Over time the oils in the cedar with the
tobacco creates the flavors only found in aged cigars. The cedar
also lessens the chance of the cigars molding and keeps the
humidor well sealed.
Ageing cigars is not a difficult process, as long as you get the
rights tools above. Mainly, getting the best cigars is the best
place to start!
