Buying Cigars As
Gifts
If you are looking to buy cigars for someone on your gift list
then you might also be wondering how to choose a cigar they will
like. You do not have to know a lot about cigars to pick a good
one. There are a few basics that you should know that will make
choosing a cigar or cigars for them a lot easier.
Because cigars have now become part of mainstream life, this has
actually made picking out and choosing a good cigar easier for
anyone who wants to start smoking cigars or someone looking to buy
them as a gift. However, you will not be able to buy a box of top
of the line Cuban cigars for a friend or family member, at least
not legally. Though you can find many other brands and flavors
that any cigar lover would enjoy.
First rule of thumb is that a cigar aficionado would never smoke
drug store cigars. These are much cheaper and less expensive,
along with a lot easier to purchase. However, they are of very
poor quality and have many preservatives in them that no daily
cigar smoker would ever try. Drug store cigars usually contain
ingredients like saltpeter, paper, glycerin, and many other
preservatives and irritants that leave a bad after taste in the
smoker’s mouth and are generally even worse for the routine cigar
smoker. Any cigar you are purchasing should be made of 100%
tobacco and if you are unsure what ingredients are in the cigars
you are purchasing, and then just ask. A good and honest
salesperson while be able to tell you and have an extensive
knowledge of the cigars they are selling.
This leads to point number two. Go to your local cigar shop or
tobacco store. A store that specialize in cigars and / or tobacco.
They will have the best cigars around and have plenty of
information on the taste, strength, and flavor of the cigars you
are looking at.
So third when you get to the cigar shop you will be allowed to
smell and touch the cigars you are looking at. You can squeeze
them gently to make sure they are neither too soft nor too hard.
When a cigar has perfect moisture it will give a little when you
squeeze it. Also, it should be slightly firm with no excessively
hard or soft spots along the entire length of the cigar. If the
cigar is lumpy in any way then you know that the cigar has become
dried out in some spots or was wrapped poorly. Next look at the
wrapper. There should be no dry spots or discoloration along the
entire length of the wrapper either. If there is you know that the
cigar is dried out and will not burn properly. Ideally the wrapper
should be smooth and tight, you should be able to run your fingers
along it without any hang-ups. The color of the tobacco should be
even also, no light and dark spots. You can do this by looking at
the end of the cigar. There will be some color variations; however
it should not have huge changes though. Again, the cigar was not
properly rolled and could also possibly loose on the inside. When
a cigar is rolled improperly it will not burn correctly and may
leave an unpleasant odor.
Purchasing cigars for friends or family does not have to be
difficult. If you keep these few tips in mind you will be sure to
pick a winner.
